Jabuka is a fast-paced word game that uses unique, coffee bean-shaped letter tiles. Its core mechanic is the ability to twist and rotate the tiles to form different letters and steal words from opponents.
Unlike traditional word games with turns (like Scrabble), all players in Jabuka play simultaneously, racing to find words using the face-up tiles in the centre of the table.
The key feature is that many yellow-colored tiles can be rotated to represent different letters (e.g., an 'm' can become a 'w' or an 'e'; a 'j' can become an 'r'; a 'b' can become a 'g'). This adds a layer of spatial thinking and creativity to traditional word-finding.
Players can "hijack" or steal words from opponents by:
- Twisting one of the existing letters in the word to form a new word.
- Adding new letters from the centre pile to an opponent's word.
- Rearranging the letters to form an entirely new word.
Each player starts with two blank (wild) tiles that can be designated as any letter, but opponents can use that wildcard to their advantage when stealing.
The goal is to collect the most "beans" (letter tiles) by the end of the game. The game ends when all the face-down tiles have been flipped and the first player makes a final word, shouting "Jabuka!".
The game encourages quick thinking, vocabulary skills, and strategic thinking about how to build words that are difficult for others to steal. The game is highly portable, coming in a small burlap sack.
